Should I consider Chemical free or Organic? We can only suggest you do your own research, but many doctors and consumers are concerned about the risks of Fire retardants, pesticides and other chemicals in our mattresses, cribs and clothing. 1. Recent changes in Government regulations have forced manufactures to use significantly more fire retardants in all mattresses, including crib mattresses. We offer US hand made chemical free mattresses, organic and natural bedding and pillows 2. Unless Organic, cotton is treated as many as 40 times before being harvested. In the US, Cotton is regulated as a food crop so damage from pesticides is mostly environmental(still not good) and not as much of a risk to our health. However, world wide many banned pesticides like DDT are still commonly used on cotton. They have a much longer 'half life' and can often be detected even in processed cotton. Cottoninc.com is an industry website that may make you feel better about US grown cotton. There are other resources that are very concerned about the environmental impact and health risks of pesticides. Cotton industry website Organic trade association If you are concerned, buy organic, or at least US grown 'Green' cotton. Or use alternative sustainable fibers that require little or no pesticides, like Bamboo, Kapok, Hemp. At EarthWorks, we want to encourage the use of alternative fair trade, and organic products.
